Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Specialist Oral Surgeon?
A Specialist Oral Surgeon is registered as a Dental Specialist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). They undergo extensive training to competently manage complex surgery of the teeth and mouth, often referred by Dentists and Doctors. In addition to a Bachelor of Dental Surgery, a Specialist Oral Surgeon needs at least three years of formal postgraduate surgical training and a postgraduate clinical doctorate qualification.
What can a Specialist Oral Surgeon do?
A Specialist Oral Surgeon specialises in complex surgery of the teeth and mouth. Surgery commonly performed include the management of wisdom teeth, complex dental extractions, sinus lift for implant therapy, bone and soft tissue grafting, dental implants and the diagnosis and management of oral pathology.
Do I need a referral from a Dentist or Doctor?
Many patients are referred by their Dentist or Doctor, but a referral is not always required. Our team can advise you when you contact the clinic.
Will I be put to sleep for my surgery?
Surgery can be done under local anaesthesia (awake), twilight sedation (conscious sedation) or general anaesthesia (asleep). Your surgeon will discuss the options with you. If you are having your surgery under general anaesthesia, it will be performed at a local accredited private hospital.
How long does recovery take after surgery?
Recovery time varies depending on the procedure, but most patients return to normal activities within a few days. Your surgeon will provide detailed aftercare instructions to support a smooth recovery.
What are the fees?
A consultation fee is charged for appointments. If surgery is advised, you will receive a quote after your consultation before any treatment goes ahead. If you have Private Health Insurance, you may be entitled to a rebate.
