Sinus Lift & Bone Grafting

Overview

A sinus lift (also known as sinus augmentation) is a surgical procedure used to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw, specifically in the area of the molars and premolars. This procedure is commonly required when there is insufficient bone height to safely support dental implants in the upper posterior jaw.

Sinus lift surgery creates a stable foundation for implant placement and is a predictable and well-established procedure in oral surgery.

When Is a Sinus Lift Required?

A sinus lift may be recommended when:

  • Bone height in the upper jaw is insufficient for implant placement

  • The maxillary sinus has expanded following tooth loss

  • Teeth have been missing for a long period of time

  • Bone loss has occurred due to periodontal disease or infection

Clinical examination and 3D imaging are used to assess bone volume and determine whether sinus augmentation is required.

The Sinus Lift Procedure

The procedure involves carefully lifting the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material into the space created beneath it. This allows new bone to form over time, increasing the height and volume of bone available for dental implants.

Depending on the individual case:

  • Implants may be placed at the same time as the sinus lift, or

  • Implant placement may be delayed to allow for graft healing and integration

The procedure is performed with a strong focus on precision and patient comfort.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most patients experience mild to moderate swelling or discomfort following sinus lift surgery.

Patients are typically advised to:

  • Avoid blowing their nose during early healing

  • Sneeze with their mouth open

  • Follow prescribed medication and oral hygiene instructions

  • Avoid strenuous activity for several days

Detailed post-operative instructions are provided to support safe healing.

Risks and Considerations

Sinus lift surgery is a predictable procedure; however, potential risks may include:

  • Swelling or bruising

  • Infection

  • Sinus membrane perforation

  • Delayed graft integration

Careful planning and surgical technique significantly reduce the likelihood of complications.

Referral and Ongoing Care

We accept referrals for sinus lift procedures as part of implant treatment planning. Referring dentists receive clear communication regarding assessment findings, surgical outcomes, and recommended timelines for implant placement.
